In this activity, you will
examine how we could use certain information of our body parts to predict our
height. The table below shows anthropometric characteristics of eight males and
eight females. Use these data to answer question 1, 2, and 3.

Sitting Height is measured from the
surface of the seat to the top of height
Arm Span is measured from the fingertip of
the left hand to the fingertip of the right hand when both arms are fully
extended
1. Using the data for the
first person ( S/No.1), calculate the ratio of the actual height to the humerus
breadth
Actual Height : Humerus breadth =
2. Using the ratio calculated
in Qn (1), calculate the predicted heights of the other 15 persons. Compare
these values that you have calculated with their actual heights given in the
table. Comment on the results, and state any observations you have made.
3. From the given data, find
the physical anthropometric characteristics that could best predict one
person’s height using a direct proportion relation.

Processes/Strategies
1.
Processes through which
the problem is approached.
2.
Strategies used in
finding solution.
|
No
attempt, or meaningful work is not evident.
|
The
processes/ strategies are in part meaningful, but overall ineffective.
|
The
processes/ strategies could lead to the correct answer but are not
systematic.
|
The
processes/ strategies used are effective and systematic.

Results/Answers
|
No
attempt, or answers provided are incorrect
|
Calculate
the ratios correctly for at least one category.
|
Calculate
the ratios correctly for at least four categories, or calculate the
differences between ratios correctly for at least one category.
|
Calculate
the differences between ratios correctly for at least four categories.
|
Draw
final conclusion correctly, i.e., “arm span” is the best predictor.
|
Presentation/ Communication
1.
Ability to organize and
present solutions clearly
2.
Ability to communicate
or explain concisely.
|
No
attempt, or what is presented is irrelevant
|
Relevant
work is presented, but in a fragmented way. Communication is largely unclear.
|
Presentation
is reasonably organized, and communication is largely clear, but not
complete.
|
Presentation
is well-organized, and communication is clear and basically complete; except
there are occasional omissions.
|
Presentation
is carefully organized, and communication is clear, concise, and complete.
