This is a great film. So many
things can be learned from this movie. This movie tells me about how a teacher
can struggle with the new environment. The main character is a teacher named
Clament Mathieu. He was a new teacher in a boarding school which consisted of
the boys, and they had problems either with their attitude or their learning.
Clament Mathieu taught the music lesson. He shocked with his new environment
which was a very discipline, but there was a wrong method that applied, that is
“action – reaction” which means if the students do mistakes, they will be
punished in a cruel way. The punishments could be isolated in a special-dark
room, cleaning the toilet, washing the clothes, physically violence, and many
more. Clament Mathieu disagreed with those all punishment, so he had his owns
way to punish his students.
People have more than one identity;
it means everyone .has a role as a worker, as a husband/wife, as a student, as
the community member, and etc. Teacher’s role as a profession means he has to
be a good model for his students. Generally, teacher lives in
“school-environment”. In there, he has to have a good attitude and has to
reduce his bad attitude. He has to be a professional when he acts; he has to
encourage his students by his teaching and learning. Teacher’s role as an
individual means he acts as himself. I mean, everyone has his own characters,
but it doesn’t mean he can act anything what he likes, he has to consider his
profession as a teacher, so he has to be nice person everywhere he is. The same
thing happens in teacher’s role as a community member. He will be looked as his
profession too. My conclusion is everywhere a teacher is, he should act as a
nice person, and should be a role model not only for his students, but also for
another people around him.
Back to the film, if I was being
a teacher in that movie, I will do the similar thing. I will make my own
punishment which has a value to be learned because physically violence is
really useless, nothing can they learn if they are punished. Moreover, it has
been arranged in the policy, so that I will ignore for that punishment.
However, in that movie, the teacher broke the rules. Outside his teaching-time,
he often did something without Principles’ permission. I mean, he made his own
decision whereas it relates to whole school. So, as a teacher, I will always
ask permission from the Principles first before continuing my plan. However, if
the Principle doesn’t accept my plan, I will think creatively how to realize my
plan under Principal’s permission. It will be very hard, but I will try as best
as I can.
In my opinion, the professional
teacher should teach and give the best to the students. It means, the teaching
and learning purpose is not only to be liked or loved by the students, but also
giving the best thing for them based on our perspective. For instance, if we think
the students will get a better result by the treatment A, so that we have to
implement it to them, even they don’t like that treatment. The reason why I
state that because so many teachers do something what students’ like, so that
the students will like and adore his/her, whereas what he/she done is not the
best way for the students. To be adored and to be loved by the students is not
merely wrong, but giving what students needs is much better.
Another thing is a standard of behaviors; it’s like how
to get dress, to be polite, to be punctual, and etc. Moreover, a professional
teacher must confidence, but without arrogant because so many teachers proud of
their selves just because he or she graduated from a great institution. To be
proud to ourselves is good, but we have to show them in a good way, so that
they will not see any arrogance. So many teachers who want to be seen as the
smartest person in the class, so when the students ask something out of our
knowledge and we cannot answer the question, the teacher should admit his
“weakness” and promise to the students that he will bring the answer in the
next meeting. Don’t be an arrogant like we know everything.
Teachers’ preparation for his/her teaching in the
classroom is another characteristic of a professional teacher. If the teacher
has nothing to be brought to the class and let the class flow like water, it
just shows how un-professional he is. By preparing the stuff for the teaching
and learning, the students will be amazed how good and care you prepare for
them.
